The album spawned six Top 20 US singles, including the US Billboard Hot 100 No. It has been certified 12× platinum for sales in the US and 13× platinum in Canada, selling over 25 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. 10 in Germany without any Top 50 singles in those countries. 2 on the US album chart, Pyromania was certified Diamond in the US and 7× platinum in Canada and reached the top 20 in the UK but did not sell much elsewhere.ĭef Leppard's fourth album, the more pop-oriented Hysteria (1987), topped the UK, US, New Zealand, Canadian, Australian and Norway charts. Def Leppard's next studio album, Pyromania, was released in January 1983, with " Photograph" and " Rock of Ages" both topping the US Rock Tracks chart and reaching the top 20 of the Hot 100. Their second album, 1981's High 'n' Dry, was produced by Mutt Lange, who helped them begin to define their melodic hard rock style, and the album's most popular track " Bringin' On the Heartbreak" became one of the first rock videos played on MTV in 1982, but the album only reached the Top 30 and 40 in the UK and US. Their first album, 1980's On Through the Night, reached the Top 15 in the UK but received little notice elsewhere. The band's greatest commercial success came between the early 1980s and the early 1990s. They established themselves as part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement of the early 1980s. Since 1992, the band has consisted of Joe Elliott (lead vocals), Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals), Rick Allen (drums, backing vocals), Phil Collen (guitars, backing vocals), and Vivian Campbell (guitars, backing vocals).
However, when producer Mutt Lange remixed it for pop stations, 70 of them picked the song up and “it exploded” across the nation, rocketing to #2 on the pop chart and finally driving the eleven-month-old Hysteria to the top of the albums chart in July of 1988.Def Leppard are an English rock band formed in 1977 in Sheffield. In the US, it was Hysteria’s fourth single – released a full seven months after the album had come out.
It had similar success in Australia and New Zealand. Released as the second UK single for the album, it reached a very respectable #18 there. Elliot explained in 2000:Īll of the sudden, rock and rap did mix, so we wrote our own.īecause Hysteria was already so far behind schedule and cost so much at that point, the record company originally did not want the band to spend more time and money finishing it to include it on the record, but Lange convinced them to allow it.
Elliot believes that the first record he ever bought, "Sugar Sugar” by The Archies, was probably his subliminal inspiration for this track, as that song contains the very similar lyric “pour a little sugar on it, baby”.Įlliot was also inspired by the recent success of Run DMC’s groundbreaking collaboration with Aerosmith on “Walk This Way”. The first is that Joe Elliot asked Mutt Lange if he wanted one lump or two in his tea, to which Lange responded, “I don’t care, just pour some sugar on me.” The other is producer Mutt Lange overheard Elliot “playing around on the acoustic guitar singing ‘pour some sugar on me'”, and he insisted the song be fleshed out. There are two stories as to how the lyric came about. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” was thrown together in the last ten days of recording sessions for Hysteria.
